If only there was a neat little answer that would make sense of all it. I do agree with you, though, that killing is not okay. I read this post last night and I thought about it for a bit. This post brings to mind my thoughts that the Bible doesn't tell us everything and even the people that are in the Bible that spoke to God probably weren't told everything either. I know that God sees the WHOLE picture and we only get to see a part of it.

I'm not looking to get into any kind of a theological discussion, but take, for example, the story of Noah and the ark. Everybody on the planet, except for Noah and his family, were completely wiped out. The only indication of why is that men married whichever woman they wished... and then it goes on to mention the Nephilim, refers to them as the "sons of God" and they were apparently also taking human women as their wives. I have looked up this term, but nobody can give a definite answer of what they are. My guess is that they are, or were, demons/fallen angels and them fornicating with humans was not really supposed to happen. It does seem a little hard to believe that only Noah and his family weren't participating in the supposedly forbidden, but that's what I get out of that story. It seems odd that any being fallen from heave would be visible, but maybe that was the case. But, then that begs the question why the whole population had to be wiped out. I wish I had answers for you, everybody else and myself, but all I can conclude is that we are kept from knowing everything that God knows about what has happened, what is happening, and all the possibilities of what could happen. If only I knew why we aren't given all the facts...

I know what you mean. :)

Honestly, in this political climate, I don't think an author can have a same-sex relationship in a story, or even mention the issue, without having it be interpreted as a comment on society.

If I wanted to keep it neutral, I'd probably make same-sex bonds forbidden for much the same reasons they are forbidden in our world: religion, tradition, and people just being uncomfortable with it. Such bonds would still exist, and many people would be okay with it. Some people would be violently not okay with it. Some people would be violently not okay with people being not okay with it. Most probably wouldn't care one way or another.

I'd basically re-create our current climate using similar problems and belief patterns, and then place my characters somewhere on the spectrum. It probably wouldn't be the central conflict of the story...but it could be *a* conflict, depending on where my characters stand on the issue.

I think you have an interesting idea here, but I can't help but point out one thing. You mention a thought of possibly making same-sex Flaw bonds outright forbidden. Assuming you work on this idea and you use the same-sex forbidden thing, I would just say to be careful with that and make sure there's a set reason for it being that way... I would hate for it to be mistakenly taken as a personal societal statement.

I am really glad to hear you are working on the Smell of November story again. I really enjoyed that one.
If you have not read Jim Butchers books, they touch on the vampirism thing about "once bitten" and so forth as the series progresses. They are also a great lesson in how to build a story through increasing levels of conflict interspersed with small moments to catch your breath.

I wasn't offended in the least! I would rather know about any cringe-worthy story elements now than after the story is written. :D And it's good to know what people think...besides me and the hubby (who is subjected to my thoughts on stories, um, often). So, thank you!

Mistress of Feathers is actually my admin self. I really should have logged out and back in as Nightphoenix, but alas, I wasn't paying attention.

And now I comment again with the same user for the sake of continuity.
