Of mermaids and rhyme

I did manage to finish Turn Loose the Mermaids before the end of last month, keeping me on my two-per-month quota.

Turn Loose the Mermaids

Went with a Lady of Shallot theme with this one, as it fit so well with the mood of the song. I’m not quite as pleased with it as I was with Storytime, mostly because of the tree leaves…but it came out pretty well.

This month I’m doing Rest Calm and Arabesque. Rest Calm is in the process of being inked, Arabesque is composed…and I’m also slowly putting FantasMic together. The epics I’m doing as two-page spreads, so the composition has to be a little different.

I’ve also started looking up famous poems…ideally one to “fit” each song. Depending on the song, I’d put in the whole thing, just a stanza or two, or maybe just a snippet. I’d put these in the blank space around each image. We’ll see how that works…I may only do it for the meta images in the end. (The meta image I have in mind between Once and Dark Passion Play is what inspired this. This bit of Poe’s Annabel Lee works so well I just had to use it):

“It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,

That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love-
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.”

Anyway.

After Imaginaerum was done, I was going to continue doing the songs in no particular order, but I realized this weekend that’s not going to work so well for doing the little side images. I can’t really decide how those are going to flow until I know what the main images look like and which way they’re oriented.

All that means is that instead of tackling all the songs completely randomly, I just have to do them by album. Somewhat in order but not necessarily. Some of the songs I plan to do in pairs anyway, like Feel For You/Phantom of the Opera and Scaretale/Arabesque…as I want the elements of one to flow into the other. (Feel For You/Phantom of the Opera is going to be really cool: I plan to have Tuomas lurking in the background of Phantom wearing the mask (because he is NW’s true Phantom), between the Marco/Tarja duet, holding a set of puppet strings…which will cross over to the girl in Feel For You. Controlling her from the next song over.)

So after Imaginaerum, I’m doing Once (as I really want to do Higher Than Hope and Creek Mary’s Blood this year), then Dark Passion Play, Century Child, Oceanborn, Wishmaster, and Angels Fall First. Why that order? I feel like of all the Tarja-era albums, Once is the closest, thematically and mood-wise, to Imaginaerum…and same thing with DPP and CC. And I want to do AFF last because it’s the one I’m least familiar with…gives me the maximum amount of time to get used to the songs.

I’ve also decided that if I have the time, I’m going to redo Ghost River. Not that it isn’t good, but I did that one with an old, single sized pen that gave out 3/4 of the way through it. Plus given how much I’ve improved at this style just in the last few months, I know I could make it so much better. I will probably go back and touch up some of the others (especially The Siren…I just never got the contrast the way I wanted to on that one).

I also finished a piece for another deviantART contest:

Lara Croft

There’s a Tomb Raider reboot in the works, and whoever wins this contest could have their work turned into official merchandise. This one was fun to do, as I got to play with perspective and lighting. However, I’ve looked at the other entries for this and frankly, I don’t think I stand a chance in hell. But I guess we’ll see.

Revelation is plodding along. I worked on the elders tonight and got about half of them done. Parts are ready to start inking and other bits are still rough sketches. The four living creatures are going to be the awesome but tedious part…going to cover them in patterns.

I redid the basic outline of Mask today as well…will start re-plotting the scenes tomorrow. Made Lily into more of a rebel character and fixed some of the gaping plot holes.

Aaaaaand…been listening to my whole metal collection, specifically the Evanescence and Within Temptation that I’d been neglecting.

It’s funny…when I write it all out like this, it seems like I’m getting a lot done. I just wish it felt like I was making progress…at least a little more often.
